The Automatiste Revolution: Montreal 1941 – 1960 at the Varley Art Gallery has been named No. 1 Exhibition of the Year by Canadian Art, a national quarterly guide to exhibitions and events in visual arts.

The Varley beat out big-name galleries such as the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Musee des beaux-arts de Montreal and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Toronto.

Curated by Roald Nasgaard, the exhibition The Automatiste Revolution “retrieves the arrival of a homegrown avant-garde that not only had artistic consequences for art-making across Canada but also had social consequences in helping to spur the modernization of Quebec,” praised Canadian Art.

“It’s an exhibition that reminds us how good art can travel far, whether it’s travelling at the moment or not.”

The Automatise Revolution is on display at the Varley until Feb. 28.
