Acrylic Painting – Beginner
(adult)

This course for the novice acrylic painter will introduce students to the unique, “forgiving” qualities of acrylic paint and allow them to experiment with a variety of techniques.

Start at the very beginning and learn about choosing paints and painting surfaces and how to make the most of your paint and brushes as you work. Basic colour theory and colour mixing will be explored as well as creating glazes and textures.

Acrylic Painting, Intermediate                          

This course is designed for those who have some previous experience with acrylic painting.  Participants will be encouraged to work in larger formats, using traditional painting materials and fluid acrylics as well as heavy body paints. While technique will remain an important aspect of this course, emphasis will be placed on experimentation and on building a personal style and colour sense, choosing subject matter and open in-class discussions about the work produced.

Judith Livingston will introduce registrants to unique approaches using acrylic paints, mediums and varnishes. Draw and Paint, Beginner                                                

A course in drawing and painting for the absolute beginner.  The emphasis is on learning the fundamentals in drawing such as composition, contour, proportion, form and perspective, painting through focus on colour theory, mixing colour, brush work and composition.

Drawing for the Absolute Beginner                       

The perfect class for ones who have always wanted to learn to draw but were afraid to take the plunge! This class could be the springboard to further art studies in painting, design.  Even if you have little to no instruction, you will learn to turn a blank page into your personal artistic statement as professional artist Glenn Bernabe teaches you the fundamentals of form, perspective, proportion, contour and composition.  Students will use conte, charcoal and ink and be introduced to specific exercises designed to develop drawing skills.

Hand-built Pottery                                                   

Explore one of the oldest forms of artistic expression in this class in hand-built pottery for the beginner to intermediate potter.  Students will be introduced to different materials and equipment involved in sculpting, as well as basic techniques in coil, pinch and modeling.  Learn how to create one-of-a-kind art that is a combination of function and aesthetics.  Students will have the opportunity to create two complete sculptural pieces which will be glazed and kiln-fired ($45 materials and ceramic firing fee payable at time of registration)

Landscapes for the Avid Painter                       

Break out of your winter doldrums and bring the outside in.  Ideal for the beginner to intermediate artist, our professional artist will assist students with the development of techniques that capture the rhythms, colours and moods of landscape painting.   Students will also learn how to use line, shape, colour, and texture and explore the principles of composition, balance and perspective.   Artists will work in both acrylic and watercolour, while comparing the contrasting styles and techniques of working with two very different media.           

Life Drawing, Beginner                        

A perfect course for the absolute beginner or the intermediate student, designed to help understand and apply the fundamental principles of drawing the human figure.  Topics include: gesture and contour, basic perspective, foreshortening and composition. Students will explore gestural drawings moving into more sustained and expressive poses. Emphasis is on developing both your drawing skills and your visual ability. Classes are based at the Gallery, allowing students to study works by Fred Varley and other featured Canadian artists. Materials not provided.  Additional $ 45 fee covering the expense for a live model for each class is payable to the instructor on the first day of classes.

Mixed Media & Collage                        

This course introduces and explores a variety of mediums and techniques and is ideal for the beginner to intermediate artist looking for new challenges.  Drawing, Painting in Watercolour, Printmaking, Mixed Media and Collage will be presented by well-known artist Judith Livingston.  Students will be taken through a natural progression from one medium to the next. A fun and creative way to rejuvenate for the week ahead.

Oil Painting, Beginner                        

In this introductory course you will learn how to use oil paints in a variety of ways experimenting with different art tools and media.  Students will also learn how to use line, shape, colour and texture and explore the principles of composition, balance and perspective with experienced artist and instructor Janet Hendershot.   Classes are based at the Gallery, allowing participants to study oil paintings in the current exhibition and the Gallery’s permanent collection of featured contemporary Canadian Artists.

Photography for Beginners                       

This introductory course by our professional photographer explores photographic techniques, and how one can express themselves through the camera, to share ideas and inner feelings.  Participants will investigate how light affects form, colour and composition; how to choose the right shooting angle and create focal lengths and perspective; light readings in adverse lighting conditions (direct sunlight to street illumination) and how to best utilize light and shadow.  Get to know the inner workings of your camera to best utilize this unique instrument so you can capture that moment in time! Film or Digital cameras are welcome although the course is geared to the 35 MM shooter. However, Medium Format and adjustable Point and Shooters are welcome.  Recommended accessories include: accessory or pop-up flash, wide angle and zoom lenses, sturdy tripod, memory cards and batteries.

The Art of Printmaking (adult)This is one of a kind class where you will discover the mysterious world of printmaking, an art form that is almost lost and often misunderstood.  You will be exposed to the artist Sarka Buchl-Stephenson’s personal international print collection. Participants will learn the history behind printmaking and have hands-on experience in the process of relief and intaglio printing.  Some of the techniques that participants will learn include: drypoint, mono-based printing, lino-cut and Styrofoam printing.  You will have an incredible opportunity to visit the artist’ studio and try your hand at printing using a professional printing press. The final project involves creating a series of personalized cards.  A materials fee of $45 will be payable at time of registration. 

The Art of the Portrait                                               

Learn the foundations of portraiture and experiment with a variety of drawing and painting materials including soft pastels and acrylics (no oil paints) while paying homage to Fred Varley, one of Canada’s greatest portrait artists.  With the emphasis on colour, perspective and design students will work on different methods from still life and photographs, to mirrors (for self-portraits) and a live model to sharpen their ability to capture likeness.  This class is suitable for absolute beginners, and is open to a limited number of students.  A nominal fee of $20 (cash) covering the expense for a live model for selected session(s) must be paid to the instructor on the first day of classes.  

Watercolour, Beginner           

Learn the basics of watercolour painting – colour, brush techniques, and other methods of applying the paint.  Emphasis will be placed on solid drawing, composition, and colour theory. Some basic drawing skills recommended.

Watercolour Progression                              

Welcoming all who enjoy painting with watercolours! Come and learn how this oldest of mediums can be both exciting and rewarding! Further your knowledge on basic techniques with colour, value and design theories by painting flowers, still lifes and by using photographs.  It is recommended that participants should have completed an introductory level course or has some experience with watercolours.
