    Fred Varley’s artistic legacy in Markham continues at the McKay Art Centre.

    The City of Markham is proud to claim as their own the historic Kathleen McKay/Salem Eckhardt house, recently restored to its original splendour. The house dates to the 1840′s and was the home of Frederick Horsman Varley, famed Group of Seven member, during the last 12 years of his life. In his studio on the lower level of the house, Varley created various portraits and landscapes inspired by the surrounding area.

    Now used for art exhibitions local artists rent the main level of this beautiful Victorian-era home to showcase their work. Ideally located on picturesque Main Street Unionville, the McKay Art Centre attracts art lovers, tourists, history buffs and locals alike.

    A Booking Request Form BookingForm2012Mckay must be completed by the artist, or group. Please provide a first and second choice on the form. For first time artists, include digital images which are representative of the work to be exhibited. All bookings must be approved by the Administrator of the Varley Art Gallery of Markham.

    After the Booking Request is approved, the artist(s) will receive a confirmation letter and contract from the Administrator to review and sign. Please, note that, in order to ensure fair access to the exhibit space, an individual artist may book one solo exhibition per year, unless the exhibit space becomes available and is offered at the full discretion of the Varley Art Gallery.

    The renting of the Art Centre is considered final upon completion of the Rental Contract and accompanied with the Rental Deposit (50% of the Rental Fee). The balance of the payment is due on the installation day.

    The City of Markham requires that all persons or companies renting City facilities must have insurance coverage of two million dollars general public liability naming the Corporation of the City of Markham as additional insured and including full participant coverage.

    The Gallery has two pricing categories: Resident Rate (Markham artist residents and Markham artist groups are included, groups must have 70% of the participants as Markham residents) and Non-Resident Rate, each with a high and low season rate. All rates are exclusive of HST.
